Filming in Area 3 of Playa Vista Campus

Area 3

Area 3 comprises areas outside of Brickyard property such as the sidewalks, parks, recreation and community spaces. The Playa Vista Interactive Map is a great resource to learn more about the area.

Any filming requests for “common areas” center of sidewalk to curb, streets (including parking/staging) and parks on the commercial and residential end are managed either by Sandra Kitashima at the Playa Vista Property Owners Association (POA) or Dawn Suskin at the Playa Vista Parks and Landscape Corporation (PVPAL). Students are not charged a fee for filming by the POA or PVPAL.

All requests must be submitted at least 2 weeks in advance to Sandra or Dawn. Students will also need to submit a FilmLA permit request in addition to receiving permission from the POA or PVPAL.

Due to the high demand on the weekends by the local residents, filming is not allowed on Saturday and Sunday. Students can film Monday through Friday in the parks, recreation and community areas outside of our building. Students can film for a total of five (5) hours and in only one location. This includes setup and breakdown. There is no wiggle room to get any extended time or multiple locations.

How to Determine Whether you Should Write to Sandra Kitashima or Dawn Suskin:

  • Refer to the POA-PVPAL Map for clarification on what areas Sandra Kitashima and Dawn Suskin oversee.
  • Dawn Suskin approves filming requests for spaces in the residential areas, WEST of Westlawn Avenue. She recommends (3) parks for student filming that don’t see a lot of requests from residents:
  • Chess Park
  • Crescent Park
  • Fountain Park
  • Sandra Kitashima approves filming requests for spaces within The Campus at Playa Vista, in the non-resident, commercial areas. This would include parks, recreation and community areas EAST of Westlawn Avenue such as:
  • Campus Central Park
  • Bandshell
  • Playground
  • West Volleyball Park (Sand)
  • Basketball Court
  • Ponds, Berm gardens
  • Steve Soboroff Court (Court Park)
  • Spruce Goose Park – Succulents, bench
  • DG path goes behind Youtube Space LA, behind Volleyball court

How to Request to Film in the PV Parks, Recreation and Community Areas:

To receive permission from the POA or PVPAL, students must email filming inquiries to Sandra Kitashima, Director of Experience and Member of POA Board or Dawn Suskin, Executive Director, Playa Vista Parks & Landscape Corporation (PVPAL). Please copy TBD on your email request to either Sandra or Dawn so that she can confirm your status as an LMU student.

Both student and industry requests are required to answer the questions below. Please address each question in your email to Sandra or Dawn.

  • Desired date(s) of filming.
  • Hours requested – including set-up and break-down time?
  • Location (include a map or photo).
  • Is this a production shoot?
  • How many people, including cast and crew?
  • Number of vehicles, personal and production?
  • Is BaseCamp required? If so, how many catering trucks, etc.?
  • Is street parking required? If so, how many feet?
  • Will filming require the closing down of streets?
  • Description of scene (1-2 sentences)

Variables that Can Impact a Request to Film in the Playa Vista Community:

  • You may need approval from multiple entities such as the POA, the PVPAL, individual HOA’s (Homeowner’s Association) or Sub HOA’s from the individual building complexes. For example, if the area you are requesting is adjacent to a residence, Dawn (PVPAL) may need to consult with that building’s HOA to make sure another event isn’t already scheduled.
  • Events scheduled in Playa Vista may impact filming approvals. Residents reserve parks and open spaces for personal events.
  • Filming IS NOT allowed in the Riparian Corridor or Icon Park
  • Filming IS NOT allowed at the Public Shuttle Stops/Benches that are in use.

If you’re planning a location scout and want to use a film camera, schedule your scout with either the POA or the PVPAL beforehand otherwise PV Security will shut you down. Still photography does not require prior approval.

The POA and PVPAL require a signed “location agreement”.  Please respond to emails from the POA or PVPAL in a timely manner.

Finally, please respect our neighbors so that we can continue filming in our beautiful backlot.
