- SFTV is part of the Green Film School Alliance. You can read the press release here. The goal of GFSA is to make “green production” a standard practice for all filmmakers. Below you will find what SFTV is doing to lessen the impact of production on the environment. Interested in doing more? The GFSA has adapted industry-standard practices for students! PEACHy is a version of the Green Production Guide’s (GPG) industry-standard, best practices Production Environmental Actions Checklist (PEACH). The PEACHy can be used to submit as the EMA Green Seal for Students application. The EMA Green Seal is an industry recognized program honoring progress in sustainable production. The EMA Green Seal appears in the end credits of your film.
Physical production can generate a lot of waste that isn’t good for the environment. On average film and television productions produce 500 Tonnes of Co2. That is essentially the equivalent of 108 cars on the road for a year. Therefore, it is vital to reduce Co2 emissions as they are greenhouse gasses that evoke global warming.
SFTV recommends the industry-level sustainable practices outlined by the GFSA to Reuse, Recycle and Reduce landfill. Practicing sustainability on-set will prepare you for working in the professional world but more importantly, it’s good for the planet!
SFTV is encouraging all students to implement the following steps on-set:
Step 1 Dedicate sustainability tasks to a specific crew member. This person would help with making sure a source of water is available on-set, communicating the #PlasticFreeProduction messaging, and separating recyclables from landfill.
Step 2 Avoid Plastic Water Bottles and paper Coffee Cups on-set. (Most coffee cups contain plastic.) Encourage your cast/crew to BYO – Bring Your Own Water Bottle and Reusable Coffee Mug to set. SFTV will send some compostable coffee cups* and extra Water Bottles* to set for cast/crew who forget to bring their own. Consider bringing extras to set, if you have them, and send reminders on your Call Sheet.
Step 3 Avoid Waste! Be strategic in your catering and craft service purchases. Buy in bulk. Split the costs with another filmmaker to save money. If possible, consider making your own coffee on-set instead of buying every day. Bring your non-perishable left over craft service to COM 103, and we will donate it to the LMU Pantry.
Step 4 Provide a source of water for the Cast and Crew. No plastic water bottles! Students can refill their reusable water bottles on-set. Five PUR Water Filter Dispensers* are available to productions working off campus. PAT will assign them to Intermediate/Advanced productions. Students filming on campus have access to Water Refill Stations. Another option? Bring your own Brita to set!
Step 5 Eco Trashbags* will be provided for on-set use. Students are encouraged to separate recyclables from items that go to landfill (food waste, trash, utensils). In the future, we hope to work with Green LMU on a compost option for students. The goal is to reduce what goes to landfill.
