Lighting and Grip Toolkit

EXPENDABLES FOR YOUR L&G KIT AND DITTY BAG

There are expendables someone working in the lighting and grip department should always have in their on-set kit.  Most of the items on this list can be purchased at an expendables store such as FilmTools or Cinelease or at your local hardware store.

  • Gloves made of leather on the surface of the palms and fingers.
  • Electrical tape for quick repairs to cables.
  • Gaffers Tape (2″) (white or grey).
  • Black and Red ink markers/Sharpies.
  • Clothes pins (also known as C-47’s) for attaching gels/Blackwrap to lights and frames.
  • Utility knife/razor blade for cutting gels. Must be retractable or folding.
  • Cube Taps – a quick way to add more plug-in options.
  • Eye and ear protection.
  • Personal first aid kit.
  • Sunblock.
  • Wide brimmed hat for those outdoor days.

TOOLS

Most of the items on this list can be purchased at an expendables store such as Film Tools and Cinelease.  Some are available at a local hardware stores.

  • Tool belt/pouch. Most of the items below should be carried in and on your tool belt and pouch at all times
  • Folding steel blade knife with straight AND serrated edge-for cutting rope, sash cord etc.
  • Flashlight- LED with spare batteries
  • Multi-screwdriver-slotted and Philips interchangeability
  • Pliers-adjustable
  • Diagonal cutters
  • Wire strippers/cutters
  • Crescent wrench
  • Allen wrench set
  • Voltage tester
  • Hammer
  • Tape measure-35ft.
  • Headlight-worn on the head in place of a flashlight and freeing up your hands.

NOTE: In some cases you will need a reflective vest.  This is mandatory when working in or near moving traffic – day or night. SFTV can provide reflective vests for your approved class projects.
