A simple way to think about it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Score is a composition written specifically for film. John Williams, Ennio Morricone, and Trent Reznor write score for films. Score has <em>motif<\/em> and may be diagetic or non-diagetic. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s3SZ5sIMY6o\">Imperial March<\/a> is score.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soundtrack refers to music that adds musical texture to a film. Soundtrack can be songs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YVVTZgwYwVo\">characters sing<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1hLIXrlpRe8\">songs that play over title sequences<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an SFTV filmmaker, you have several options for music in your project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ab0c2f\" class=\"tadv-color\"><strong>ORIGINAL SCORE<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many talented composers and musicians (many are your fellow classmates) who offer their services for your projects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t forget to have a written agreement with your composer! You can download the agreement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sftvproductionhandbook.lmu.build\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/15-Music-Release-Form-1.pdf\">here<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ab0c2f\" class=\"tadv-color\"><strong>MUSIC LIBRARY<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SFTV students have access to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scorekeepersmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Score Keepers Music Library<\/strong><\/a>.  Score Keepers is a service where you can download high quality songs and film scores. Access is free for SFTV students. For login information, contact the RECA desk or email <a href=\"mailto:james.watts@lmu.edu\">Jim Watts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ab0c2f\" class=\"tadv-color\"><strong>PUBLIC DOMAIN MUSIC\/SONGS<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may want to consider using music that is in the public domain. This means that the copyright has expired and is no longer held by an individual or entity. These are usually much older songs, but give a good, cheap option. Visit this&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdinfo.com\/public-domain-music-list.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link<\/a>&nbsp;to see a list of available options.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"color:#ab0c2f\" class=\"tadv-color\"><strong>PRE-RECORDED OR PUBLISHED MUSIC<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All previously published music or pre-recorded must be cleared, regardless of how much or how little of that music is used in your project. Failure to get permission to use a piece of music opens you to a potential lawsuit from the owners of the copyright.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep in mind there are&nbsp;<strong>different rights&nbsp;<\/strong>associated with any piece music. The three that you as a filmmaker need to be concerned with are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Synchronization Rights &nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 are the rights to record music as a part of your&nbsp;film. They are usually controlled by one (or more) publishers.  Having Synchronization Rights gives you&nbsp;the ability to use the underlying composition (song, lyrics&nbsp;or melody) in timed synchronization with your picture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Performance Rights&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 getting this right allows you to recite, play, sing, dance or act out a piece of music.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Master Use License<\/strong>\u2013 this is a contract to license a recording. It is usually controlled by a Record Company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following companies can help you find out who owns the music&nbsp;you are interested in and also help with securing the proper rights. Fees are always negotiable and not all record companies and music publishers charge the same amount. Students can negotiate reduced fees for educational screenings and film&nbsp;festivals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-dark-red-color has-text-color\"><strong>Composer Roster<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are a list of contacts from musicians who have expressed an interest in working with students on their films.
